Models and projects for streets, squares and parks
28 Sep – 06 Nov 1993

Since Acconci had already established a relationship with public space in his early work, Stroom invited him for an exhibition. However, it was not so easy to show the through-line in his artistic development. We therefore chose to present more recent work of his, from 1987: 27 models of proposals for intrusions in public spaces, that were hung in the space. Since the majority of these designs were for American locations, we asked him to make a proposal for The Hague. The Laakhaven area, where the new building for the Haagse Hoogeschool was being built was seen as appropriate and chosen. Despite Acconci’s radical ‘statement’, the architect was impressed and asked him to reduce the project to a realistic scale.
