Ivana Franke – Travel Along

In a dark room, there is an undulating line of light floating in the air. If one walks throughout the room, this light wave oscillates; its amplitudes change in correlation to the movement of one’s mind and body, as if the light transcribes these movements into imagery.
A large wooden ring is placed on the floor. Another, identical one is suspended from the ceiling above it, at the three-meters height. The rings are connected by monofilament lines, which are stretched in different directions, thus forming irregular cylinder. The LED light is positioned in the middle of the cylinder, projecting light onto it. Depending on the angle of viewing, the line changes position, curvature and size.
Quartair proudly presents Ivana Franke’s first solo show in the Netherlands. The artist investigates the relationship between materiality in appearance and our feeling of spatial dimensions. Her work consists of site specific light installations. Franke often uses transparent materials and light to create a sense of temporariness. She was born in Zagreb, Croatia (1973) and is based in Berlin. The artist has exhibited at P.S.1 Center for Contemporary Art in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, The Biennale of Venice and Manifesta 7 Italy.

Nieuw werk van Ali Bramwell
artist in residence bij Quartair Contemporary Arts Initiative.
Met alledaagse, industriele en gevonden materialen maakt Bramwell installaties, als tijdelijke systemen aangepast aan de ruimte. Dit laatste werk is een voortzetting van eerder werk voortkomend uit een niet aflatende interesse in spanning en risicomanagement. Het werk is site specific en een respons op Quartair, zowel de ruimte als het kunstenaarsinitiatief.
De kunstenaar Ali Bramwell is geboren in Auckland, Nieuw Zeeland (1969), en heeft zich recent gevestigd in Slovenië. Haar werk omvat beelden, installaties en performances. Sinds 2000 produceert ze ook regelmatig internationale tentoonstellingen en publieke projecten, werkt als onafhankelijk curator en schrijver.

Quartair Open!

Quartair re-opened after a full renovation of the gallery and the studios. The former bread factory is now the home of seven ateliers and a projects space.
The new building was officially opened by our guest speakers Peter Bos and Ingrid Rollema on Friday, April 1st, at 20:00
Performance, music and dance by: Shitcluster, MC Dance/Florito and The La-Z-Boys.
Seven artists were invited to exhibit during the event: Jasper van den Brink, Paul Devens, Danitsja van Dijk, Gilbert van Drunen, Heidi Linck, Urs Pfannenmuller, Iris Wassenburg.

The swamp, in its various metaphors, is the place where human projects run into difficulties. It stands for all that is unproductive, hostile, troubling, stagnant, and obscure. It is inhospitable, sunken and opaque. But ask any naturalist who has studied the habitat and they will tell you that the swamp is in fact constantly changing, rich in diversity, teeming with life. They will tell you that it is also possible to love a swamp.
The swamp is where actions become bogged down, where our best laid plans peter out and come to nothing. It is where the intellect, too, becomes confused, muddied, hopelessly mired. It represents what is unknowable or unattainable, what cannot be grasped.
The unconscious may be envisaged as a swamp, a vast picture store, source of all imagery. This, of course, includes all of our darkest imaginings, all that convention and self-censorship has buried or hidden. Monsters emerge from the swamp.
The swamp tends towards formlessness, is resistant to shapes and structures. Hierarchies dissolve in it. It is a place of undoing and devouring.
The landscape of the swamp is not one to be strolled through; it is not a place for promenades. It is a visceral landscape, it has to be touched, it doesn’t stand back to let itself be admired, it invites being fallen into and appreciated with the whole tumble-tail body. Only up close, on our bellies, can we unpick the secrets of the swamp.
